In recent years, the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) is gaining momentum due to the development of the wireless networking, embedded systems and sensor technologies. The concept of IoT can be associated with multiple research areas such as home area networks, smart buildings, smart cities, smart healthcare services, and so forth. Many other applications are expected to be integrated into our society and support our daily life in the near future.
The tutorial aims to combine practical and hands-on experience with theoretical research in order to create and deliver the best IoT educational content to the attendees. The goal of this tutorial is to introduce students, researchers, and industry practitioners to IoT based technologies, Machine Type Communications (M2M), application protocols, describe some research initiatives and discuss how the research community can use them to shape the future IoT. The tutorial also provides hands-on experiments. The speakers will be sharing with the audience their experience in developing IoT-based research and applications.
Dr. Ala Al-Fuqaha (S’00-M’04-SM’09) received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, in 1999 and 2004, respectively. Currently, he is a Professor and director of NEST Research Lab at the Computer Science Department of Western Michigan University. Dr. Al-Fuqaha served as the Principal Investigator or Co-PI on multiple research projects funded by NSF, Qatar Foundation, Cisco, Boeing, AVL, Stryker, Wolverine, Traumasoft, and Western Michigan University. His research grant activities and collaborative efforts have culminated in $2.62 million funding. Chief among these research activities is an international collaborative effort with Qatar University and Purdue University to study the interplay between safety, security and performance in vehicular networks. Another chief research activity is a NSF funded collaborative effort with the City University of New York and the University of Nebraska Lincoln on bio-socially inspired techniques for enhanced spectrum access in cognitive radio networks.
His research interests include Wireless Vehicular Networks (VANETs), cooperation and spectrum access etiquettes in cognitive radio networks, smart services in support of the Internet of Things, management and planning of software defined networks (SDN), intelligent services for the blind and the visually impaired, QoS routing in optical and wireless networks, and performance analysis and evaluation of high-speed computer and telecommunication networks. In 2014, he was the recipient of the outstanding researcher award at the college of Engineering and Applied Sciences of Western Michigan University.
He is currently serving on the editorial board for John Wiley’s Security and Communication Networks Journal, John Wiley’s Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing Journal, EAI Transactions on Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems, and International Journal of Computing and Digital Systems. He is a senior member of the IEEE and has served as Technical Program Committee member and reviewer of many international conferences and journals.
Dr. Muhammad Anan is currently an Associate Professor of Software Engineering and the Acting Dean for the College of Engineering at Alfaisal University, Saudi Arabia. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering and Telecommunications Networking from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, USA (2008). He received a M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA, and a M.S. degree in Software Engineering from Kansas University, USA, in 1999 and 2003, respectively. Dr. Anan received his B.S. degree in Computer Engineering form King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia, in 1997. He has over ten years of industrial experience working for two of the Fortune 500 US companies, namely Sprint and IBM, in the fields of telecommunications and Software Engineering. Also, he taught at Purdue University Calumet, USA (currently called Purdue Northwest) for six years before joining Alfaisal University in 2014. Dr. Anan’s main research and teaching interests are in the areas of computer networks, cloud computing, Internet of Things, software defined networking, future Internet architectures, wireless sensor networks, embedded systems, computer architecture, software engineering and visualization. Dr. Anan is currently serving on the editorial board of John Wiley’s security and communication networks journal. He is a member of the IEEE. He serves as a technical program committee member and reviewer for many international conferences and journals.
